Ronald C. Modra traveled the world as a Sports Illustrated photographer for 25 years where he traveled to Russia, China, Japan, Europe, Australia, South America, and the Caribbean covering the Olympics, the Track and Field Championships, and every World Series and spring training. He has seventy SI covers to his credit and several of his photographs were selected for Sports Illustrated‘s 40 Best of All Time and The Century’s Best Sports Photos. He is also the two-time winner of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Best Photo of the Year award. His new book, A Baseball Life, features 40 years of his photos and essays from baseball’s best-known scribes (including Bob Costas, Tom Verducci, Tim Kurkjian, Leigh Montville and Peter Gammons).

He has shot covers for some 200 publications worldwide and contributed to dozens of publications including Time, People, National Geographic, Parade, Playboy, New York Magazine, TV Guide, Philadelphia and Country Music Magazine, to name a few.

A frequent contributor of fishing, outdoor, and travel photography, Modra’s work has appeared in publications and websites including Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, outdoorlife.com, Saltwater Sportsman, Sport Fishing, Sports Afield, Gray’s Sporting Journal, Florida Travel & Life, Florida Sportsman, Power & Motoryacht, Diversion Magazine, American Way, and espn.com.

Modra has done commercial work for Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, Reebok, Easton, Dodge, Slimfast, Columbia Sportswear, Florida Keys Tourism Council and NASCAR IMAGES, among others.

Modra has contributed to many books including ‘Baseball in America’, ‘The NBA: 50 Years’, and ‘A Day in the Life of the NHL’, ‘The Great Book of NASCAR Lists’, as well as several Sports Illustrated books including ‘The Baseball Book’, ‘Slideshow’ and ‘The Covers.’ 

He has also published thirteen collaborative books with his wife, writer M.B. Roberts, including ‘Bear’s Boys: 36 Men Whose Lives Were Shaped’ by Coach Bear Bryant (Thomas Nelson, 2007) and a series of illustrated how-to books including ‘Soccer: The Player’s Handbook’, and ‘Rugby: The Player’s Handbook’ (both Sterling Publishing, 2010). 

Modra has created album and book cover photography for country music stars including Brooks & Dunn, Brad Paisley and Travis Tritt. He has shot feature stories and concert photography for performers including Merle Haggard, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Toby Keith and the Mavericks, among others.
